The Narendra Modi government has introduced a ‘One Officer, One Official Car’ policy to streamline the use of government vehicles and strengthen financial discipline across ministries and departments.
The Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance has issued an Office Memorandum stating that officers eligible for an official staff car will not be allotted an additional government vehicle, even if they hold charge of another ministry, department, public sector undertaking (PSU) or autonomous body.

Under the revised guidelines, officers assuming additional responsibilities must continue using their existing official vehicle. Ministries and departments have been directed not to approve a second staff car in such cases.
The order also prohibits central government officers from using vehicles belonging to PSUs, autonomous bodies or quasi-government organisations, except while undertaking authorised official duties or government tours.

In addition, departments have been instructed to keep surplus or unused vehicles in secure custody to prevent unauthorised use and ensure better management of government assets.
The latest directive reinforces the staff car guidelines issued in 2022 and is intended to improve resource utilisation, eliminate duplication and promote accountable use of taxpayer-funded government vehicles.
