A dual narrative rises afresh on I-Day: As PM Modi outlines vision for ‘developed India’, Rahul Gandhi skips Red Fort event

Rahul Gandhi's absence at India's biggest official celebration of its 80th Independence Day, where PM Narendra Modi speaks on his concept of Sapt Dhara — seven streams of reform — renews old battle lines in the nation's politics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the historic Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, unveiled a five‑point roadmap for building a “Viksit Bharat” or developed India. This Independence Day event at the Red Fort in New Delhi made news as much for what Modi said in his address as for Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, skipping it.

Central to Modi’s vision were youth empowerment, women’s reservation, and self‑reliance, which he described as pillars of India’s future. Modi also expanded on the concept of Sapt Dhara — seven streams of reform — encompassing manufacturing, food processing, technology and innovation, connectivity, security, green economy, and soft power.

The PM, wearing his trademark vibrant turban, emphasised that India’s demographic dividend must be harnessed through skill development and innovation. He reiterated his government’s commitment to women’s political participation, calling the women’s quota “a transformative step for inclusive democracy.” Modi also linked self‑reliance to national security, urging industries to strengthen domestic production chains in defence, energy, and technology.

While the Prime Minister’s speech sought to project a unifying developmental agenda, the political backdrop was marked by sharp divisions. Congress party, the main Opposition in Parliament, skipped the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort, a move that drew immediate criticism from the main ruling party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Senior BJP leaders accused Congress of disrespecting national traditions, framing the boycott as an attempt to undermine the significance of the day.

Congress sources, however, maintained that their absence was a symbolic protest against what they termed the government’s “failure to uphold democratic values.” The decision added a layer of political tension to the celebrations, highlighting the widening rift between the ruling party and the principal opposition.

The juxtaposition of Modi’s ambitious developmental pitch and Congress’s conspicuous absence underscored the dual narratives shaping India’s political landscape. On one hand, the government is projecting reforms aimed at positioning India as a global power by 2047; on the other, the opposition is signalling dissent over governance and democratic practices.

As the tricolour fluttered over the Red Fort, the day became not only a celebration of India’s independence but also a reminder of the contesting visions for its future. Modi’s roadmap and Congress’s boycott together set the stage for renewed political debate in the months ahead.
