After nine months from his last competitive outing at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Neeraj Chopra made his 2026 debut at the Doha Diamond League. While the result wasn’t a podium finish, the two-time Olympic medalist came away with what he needed most: a Commonwealth Games qualifying mark.
Chopra opened with a foul, recovered with an 82.77m second throw, then hit his best of 85.69m in the third round, following that with a 83.45m and another foul, finishing fourth overall, right outside the top three required to make the final round.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage took the win with 88.68m, with Anderson Peters (86.38m) and Curtis Thompson (85.99m) rounding out the podium. Pathirage has been in sensational form recently, throwing a massive 92.62m at the Rome Diamond League earlier this month, placing him second best in Asia and eighth on the all-time world list, behind only Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem’s 92.97m from the Paris Olympics.
For Chopra, the context matters. He had spent the off-season in Switzerland recovering from a persistent back injury that had already hampered his 2025 season, which ended in an eighth-place finish at the Worlds. A clean return to competition, a valid CWG mark, and competitive throws in the mid-80s is a reasonable enough starting point.
This was Chopra’s fourth consecutive appearance at the Doha leg of the Diamond League, a venue he had won in 2023 (88.67m), finished second in 2024 (88.36m), and his current national record of 90.23m last year, crossing the coveted 90m mark only to finish runner up again.
With the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games both on the calendar this year, Doha was about fitness and rhythm, not a statement throw. He’s got one of those two. The rest will follow or maybe it won’t, but this season doesn’t look too disappointing.
