Even after PM’s forgiveness, 15-year-old Noida girl’s family keeps facing harassment

The widowed mother of Ruchika Singh, who had made derogatory comments against the PM at the CJP-led protests, says the girl had made mistakes, apologised, and was forgiven by the PM.

A widowed mother and her daughter, identified as Ruchika Singh, have vacated their rented accommodation in Noida following sustained police visits and public harassment linked to the teenager’s alleged remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest at Jantar Mantar.

The incident occurred at a demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), where Ruchika, a Class 10 student, was accused of making derogatory comments. The Noida Police registered a Zero FIR under sections relating to insult, public mischief, and defamation. The case was later transferred to Delhi Police, though officials clarified that no regular FIR has been filed and the matter may not proceed further.

A day after Delhi Police began examining the Zero FIR, Ruchika posted a video with folded hands and bowed head, apologising to the nation. She claimed she was 15 years old and had been influenced by groups at the protest site. In her statement, she admitted: “What I did is unforgivable. I said something very vulgar. But this is my first and last mistake. I will never do something like that again. I want to say sorry to the entire nation. I can’t even look up. Please forgive me.”

Her mother stressed that the Prime Minister had accepted the apology, yet the family continued to face visits from police and strangers. Neighbours reported unidentified vehicles near their residence, and the mother said harassment forced them to relocate.

Police records present contradictions. The Zero FIR lists Ruchika’s year of birth as 1994, while her mother insists she was born in 2011, making her 15. SHO Amit Khare of the Expressway police station noted that Ruchika’s family owns a flat in Lotus Zing society, Sector 150, Noida, purchased in January, though the mother maintains they had been living in rented accommodation.

The mother, widowed since 2019 after her husband’s death in an accident, is raising Ruchika alone. Her younger son lives with in‑laws. She previously taught students but now fears for her livelihood and future due to the controversy. She appealed to authorities and the public, saying her daughter had made a mistake, apologised, and been forgiven by the Prime Minister, yet the family remained under pressure.

Police sources indicated that the Zero FIR may not be converted into a regular case, though legal opinion is being sought. At the same time, the Delhi Police Cyber Cell continues a separate investigation into derogatory remarks against constitutional authorities posted by various social media accounts.

The broader protest context includes 13 FIRs already registered, covering charges such as rioting, attempt to murder, and assault on public servants. The Delhi government has assured that students who participated peacefully will not face legal action, but those with prior criminal records or who engaged in violence will be prosecuted.

The case highlights the tension between legal procedure, public outrage, and the human cost borne by a family. Despite an apology and apparent closure from the Prime Minister, Ruchika Singh and her mother remain unsettled, displaced, and seeking relief from continued scrutiny and harassment.
