US President Donald Trump undertook a clandestine flight from Turkey last month following intelligence warnings of an Iranian assassination plot, according to reports from The Washington Post and The New York Times. The operation involved elaborate deception, including the use of an airport catering truck to transfer the president from Air Force One to a smaller military jet.
Trump had travelled to Ankara for a NATO summit aboard a newly renovated Boeing 747‑8 gifted by Qatar, marking its first international deployment. However, upon departure, he was seen boarding the older “baby blue” Air Force One in front of cameras. Minutes later, he was discreetly moved via a catering vehicle to a US Air Force C‑32A, which flew him to Britain. The larger Air Force One, carrying journalists and staff, acted as a decoy.

The C‑32A landed at RAF Mildenhall around 10:20 p.m., followed minutes later by the older Air Force One with the press corps. Trump later appeared to disembark from the jumbo jet, flashing a peace sign before greeting service members and walking to the Qatar‑donated aircraft. It remains unclear how he was transferred back to the larger plane after arriving in Britain.
White House Communications Director Steve Cheung defended the operation, stating that the Qatari‑donated aircraft had been equipped with advanced security systems. “As the President has said recently, there are many enemies of America who have their sights on him, and we use every tool at our disposal to address those threats,” Cheung said.
The Pentagon declined immediate comment. Officials familiar with the operation said the deception was triggered by credible intelligence of Iranian plans to target Trump. The incident drew comparisons to a 2000 mission when President Bill Clinton flew into Pakistan aboard an unmarked jet while Air Force One was used as a decoy.
Trump himself acknowledged the unusual arrangements, telling reporters that the press had been asked to keep window shades closed “because we were probably on a dangerous flight.” He added, “But if I go, you go. Right?”

The secrecy surrounding the trip has raised questions about the security of the new aircraft, which underwent rapid upgrades before being deployed. Trump had earlier announced on social media that he would fly on the older Air Force One “for old time’s sake,” while the new plane would stop at Mildenhall for US service members to tour.
The episode unfolded against heightened tensions with Iran. During the funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed in February during US‑Israeli strikes, calls for Trump’s assassination were reportedly made. In response, Trump warned Tehran that “1,000 missiles are locked and loaded” and threatened overwhelming military retaliation if any attempt was made on his life.

The covert transfer underscores the extent of precautions taken to protect the president amid escalating hostilities in West Asia. It also highlights the administration’s reliance on deception tactics to mitigate risks, leaving lingering questions about transparency and the security of America’s highest office.![]()
